Meet the Cycling Dad

I’m a Dad, I’m a cyclist – I’m the Cycling Dad

Welcome to The Cycling Dad! If you’re a bike-obsessed parent juggling two wheels and two (or more) kids, you’ve landed in the right place. I’m Konstantin, and I’ve been riding race bikes for 20 years. While my pro-competitive days are nonexistent, my passion for the sport has only grown. I’ve also had the good fortune of working over five years as an editor at TOUR Magazin, Europe’s leading cycling magazine, based in Munich, Germany. There, I dove headfirst into the evolution of indoor cycling and yes, I’ve closely followed the market entry of Zwift and MyWhoosh and I’ve seen lots of competitors come and go. For over three years I ran the TOUR nutrition, training, and fitness department. I was in my twenties, in apparently good shape – but without any illusions about challenging the local hotshots – and at the heart of the European cycling culture with close ties around the continent.

.

Then, I became a dad. My weekly training time decreased from 12 hours to 1, with a clear focus on riding indoors once the toddler was ready for a nap, which happened far too little in the first months. I slowly picked up cycling outdoors again during the second part of my parental leave and quickly I was confronted with all sorts of problems: Which trailer is the right choice for longer trips on and offroad? Are my bikes (the current situation is 3+n) compatible with the attachment systems of the leading manufacturers? What about my bikes’ frames – do I have a guarantee when using the race bikes with trailer attached? I found very little information online, so got in contact with a lot of companies and here’s where I share my knowledge and experience with you.

Let’s go on with the reality check for cycling parents: My annual mileage on the bike has dropped from a proud 5,000 km to something less than half of that (and that’s counting about 50 percent of it spent on rollers!) because following my passion and spending time with my son seemed almost incompatible. My goal with The Cycling Dad is to help you find that sweet spot, where you get the time-efficient indoor training you need and enjoy great cycling adventures with the kids to boost your stamina (the training effect with a weight of 30 kilos or more that pulls you back is massive, I can tell!).

On thecyclingdad.com, you’ll find life hacks, custom-fit product reviews and stories from a fellow cycling dad – to help you find ways to maximize those precious hours, whether it’s crushing a power session during nap/bed time or riding with your little ones on board. If balancing family life with cycling sounds like your kind of ride, then welcome! Let’s make every pedal stroke fun.
